HISTORY
How It Started
Five Loaves and Two Fish is a faith-driven, non-profit humanitarian organization founded in December 2018 by Ogechukwu Margaret Ukatu, a registered nurse and veteran community health practitioner. Headquartered in Staten Island, New York, and operating actively in Rivers State and Anambra State, Nigeria, the Organization exists to eradicate poverty by addressing its interlinked root causes: hunger, lack of economic opportunity, and social marginalization.
The Organization's model is built on five mutually reinforcing pillars: nutritious food provision, discipleship and moral character development, economic empowerment through cooperative enterprise, vocational and agricultural skills acquisition, and community social action. These are not isolated services but integrated components of a holistic approach to human development that addresses both the immediate and structural causes of poverty.
Since launching active programming in August 2023, Five Loaves and Two Fish has grown from serving 20 families to over 400 families in Ihiala, Anambra State, a twenty-fold increase achieved in under 18 months, entirely through out-of-pocket funding by the founder. With approximately $30,000 in personal funds invested in the last fiscal year alone, the Organization has demonstrated exceptional commitment, financial discipline, and a proven program model.
